MATHERAN
Stunning views from steep cliffs and echoing valleys are what the journey
to Matheran hill station has in store for you.
Situated at an altitude of 800 mts, on a narrow north-south ridge, Matheran
consists of various view points with names such as Porcupine, Monkey,
Panorama, Echo, Sunset and the Hart point, most popular of them all.
Getting There : Mumbai , 100 kms. away, is the nearest airport, Badlapur
30 km. away , Neral 21 Km. away from where you can travel by the mini
train. It has plenty of hotels which are close to the railway stations.
AMBERNATH :
Famous for Ambreshwar Shiva temple, Industrial Units and Ordnance
Factory. Ambreshwar temple is 2 kms. away from Ambernath railway station.
It is said that Shilahara King Chittaraja constructed it, his son Mummuni rebuilt
it. The temple is on the banks of Vadvan(Waldhuni) river, which is of
hemadpanthi styled beautifully carved on stones. Another Shilahara King
Aparaditya built the Rameshwar temple, which is situated near Lonad.
Ambernath is located 10 kms from Badlapur and 40 kms from Thane.
TITWALA (MAHAGANPATI) :
It is equivalent to "ASHTAVINAYAKA" and one of the Mahaganpati.
Heavy rush of devotees is there on Chaturthi, Sankasthi and Angarika. In
olden time ashram of sage Kanva was located here. When King Dushyanta
abandoned his fiancee Shakuntala, she came here and stayed in the ashram.
She was advised by sage Durvasa and Kanva to establish shrine of
Siddhivinayak, which was done by her. After worshipping Siddhivinayak she
and Dushyanta got united. Shahad is near to Titwala and the Birla group of
company constructed a beautiful Vithal temple in Shahad. Thousands of
devotees visit daily to these temples in the naturally green places.
MALSHEJ GHAT:
Natural scenes, Waterfalls give a look that it is heaven on the earth. It
has recently become famous for one day monsoon trip. There is a 12 kms
ghat and tourists visit to see the Flammingo bird.
HAJIMALANG :
It is 16 kms from Kalyan and also known as Malang Gadh. It is located
on foot hills. Devotees visit the dargah for "Mannat". Fair is held during Magh
Purnima. It is also famous for Navnath temple.
GLIMPSES OF THANE DISTRICT
CLIMATE :
The climate of the district is generally hot and humid. There is well distributed and heavy
rainfall during the south-west monsoon season. The mountainous region receives more rainfall
than the coastal region. After February the temperature progressively increases till May which
is the hottest month with mean daily temperature at 35.9°C.
INDUSTRIES :
Thane is an important district in Maharashtra having a unique position on the industrial
map. There are number of small, medium and large scale industries in the district. MIDC has
developed industrial areas at Wagle Estate, Dombivli, Ambernath-1 & 2, Kalyan, Kalyan-
Dombivli, Thane-Belapur road, Badlapur-BIWA(Badlapur Industries Welfare Association), Mira
Road, Tarapur, Boisar and Mumbra. Small scale industries are situated at Waliv, Bhainder, Virar
and Ulhasnagar. Silk yarn and cloth are made at Bhiwandi. There are a large number of
powerlooms. There are pharmaceutical and Chemical factories at Ambernath, Bhainder and
Thane. Plastic goods are manufactured at Ulhasnagar and Bhainder. The big giants like
Raymonds, Voltas, Johnson & Johnson and Century Rayon have big units in this district. The first
Nuclear power plant in India is at Tarapur. In addition to that there is a BSES power plant and
many other important projects in this area. There are salt plants in Bhainder, Bassein,
Nallasopara and Dahanu.
TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATION :
Railway and Roads are the two modes of transport, Including three National Highways of
226 kms. i.e., Mumbai - Agra, Mumbai - Bangalore, & Mumbai - Ahmedabad. There are state
highways of 1178 kms. Total length of roads in the district is 5489 kms. Important railway
stations are Thane, Kalyan, Diwa, Dombivli, Vasai Road, Virar, Palghar & Dahanu. Kalyan is a
junction station from which the tracks run to south and west India. Diwa and Vasai Road are also
the junctions in the district which is connected by Western and Central Railways. For local
transport, local trains are used which leave from CST and go upto Kalyan, Ambernath and Kasara
in the district. Local trains leave from Churchgate and go upto Dahanu. Another railway line goes
from Diwa upto Panvel in Raigad district.
